What are cookies and other trackers?

Initially, a cookie was a mini file to facilitate communication between the visitor's device and the website's server (login cookies).
In the meantime, as a result of technological evolution, cookies are also used for many other purposes: to measure the number of visitors to the website and to collect statistics (also called "analytical cookies" or "statistical cookies"), to store users' preferences (e.g., choice of language), to store a shopping basket, for marketing and/or advertising purposes based on surfing behavior, ...
Parallel to this evolution, other technical tools - such as invisible pixels - have been developed that track users' surfing behavior on a web page. These are so-called trackers. If cookies are referred to below, this should also include other trackers.

What means does the internet user have to limit, avoid or delete cookies?

If you do not want cookies to be stored after ending your surfing session, you can use the "private browser" mode available on many PCs or mobile browsers. The surfing information is then deleted when you close your browser.
Suppose you also want to prevent cookies from being placed and read while surfing. In that case, you must permanently allow or deny the future storage and reading of cookies on or from your device in your browser's configuration settings.
Finally, in the configuration settings, you can also delete the surfing data (including cookies) already present on your device.
To help you manage these cookies and limit the intrusion into your privacy, you can install extensions and add-ons available through your browser on your computer.
